Vegas Deluxe edition

from progressive-sounds.com

Marking its 10th anniversary, Jordan and Kirkland have reassessed and readdressed the long-player that started it all with VEGAS (DELUXE EDITION), which will be released via Geffen/UMe on September 18.

For those weary of purchasing 'Vegas' again, this Deluxe Edition is quite a bit different. The first disk offers a fresh mastering of the original 10 tracks, while the second CD highlights a selection of rare and live recordings plus new mixes of classic 'Vegas' tracks from remixers such as MSTRKRFT, Hyper, Sta, Deadmau5, Koma & Bones, and many more.

In their decade-long career, THE CRYSTAL METHOD have sold over a million albums, scored a Grammy nomination and collaborated with everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to Scott Weiland to Ol’ Dirty Bastard. They headlined the Hollywood Bowl, rocked Coachella and played a fashion show in Milan for Donatella Versace. Meanwhile, their songs appeared in countless video games, movies and television series. Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland, who are THE CRYSTAL METHOD, even spent a surreal night in the Los Angeles County Jail. But before any of that happened, they made Vegas, their debut album from 1997. Marking its 10th anniversary, Jordan and Kirkland have reassessed and readdressed the long-player that started it all with VEGAS (DELUXE EDITION), which will be released via Geffen/UMe on September 18.

The two-disc deluxe set offers a fresh mastering of the original ten songs on the first CD. The second CD highlights a selection of rare and live recordings plus new mixes of classic Vegas tracks from remixers personally chosen by the duo such as Paul Oakenfold, MSTRKRFT, Hyper, Sta, Deadmau5, Koma & Bones, Tom Real vs. The Rogue Element and Myagi. Also included is the original 1993 version of the Vegas single “Comin’ Back” with the video for the album version along with the video for "Busy Child." Preceding the deluxe edition’s release, "Busy Child" (Sta remix) will be available on iTunes as of August 28.

Vegas put the Las Vegas natives at the center of an electronic music scene previously occupied almost exclusively by trailblazing Brits such as Underworld, The Prodigy and Groove Armada. Inspired in equal parts by Jordan and Kirkland’s late night outings in the early days of the Los Angeles rave scene and their reassuringly humdrum upbringing in the Las Vegas suburbs listening to everything from disco to hip hop to metal, Vegas is a different kind of techno record. It’s got soul. "One thing people have been telling us for the past 10 years is that Vegas was the first thing to get them into electronic music," Jordan says. "We just came up with a sound that bridged the gap between alternative and electronic music."

Compiled by Northern Lite
Mixed by Boon & Gunjah

from tausend.de
poorly translated

Here one can speak calmly of an excellent Compilation,
in addition there is not only this, still a fantastic mix
CD by Gunjah and DJ Boon.
The Compilation was put together again personally by Northern Lite
and contains pieces of the "Sweety" Chapeau claque, Black Strobe,
apparatus, The World Domination, the Sonic boom foundation,
Gunne and numerous Remixes and new tracks of Northern Lite themselves.
Here no boring arises, change and deep sense, with the completely
certain message, hurry ahead of boys always and one is on no account
disappointed here. Then the mix of Gunjah and DJ Boon is still
the I dot(?), more than one hour, fully of sound in scene sedate pieces
of TrentemØller, about electrochemistry, there to the
Cologne macho-one to Superpitcher and a huge number of pieces
from the house 1st. Decade. Nice one!

nice one indeed

RELISH RECORDS / HEADMAN´s superb own Label. The
head of Relish is Robi Insinna, otherwise known as
Headman, or Manhead. He met the David Gilmour
Girls when spinning in Amsterdam & after hearing
their track he instantly snapped it up for his
label. David Gilmour Girls are Robin and Jasper,
better known as members of 'Oil', one of the
Netherlands most successful punk bands.

BIOGRAPHY

David Gilmour Girls started out as a project of Dutchmen Robin van der Kaa and Jasper Uhl while playing together in the rockband Oil, with whom they'd spent several years recording and touring Europe and the United States. It became their primary focus after Oil disbanded in 2004, at the same time also expanding from a studio outfit to playing live. Drawing from such a diverse musical background created a sound that's hard to pin down - using partly seventies psychedelic rock, partly new wave, partly raw disco, using live instruments just as much as electronica, but never losing sight of the dancefloor. It has been described as 'an ever-evolving wall of sound to lose yourself in. It's drugged up & tranced out.' and 'Led Zeppelin meets Moroder'

Their first recordings attracted the attention of Robi Insinna's (a.k.a Headman) Relish Records, who consequently signed the duo. In 2004 the debut single 'Crackhousewarmingparty' was released, including a Rub 'n' Tug remix of the title track. The follow-up 'Heavy Metal Music Magazines', which included two originals and a Motiivi:Tuntematon (Timo Kaukolampi of OPL Bastards/Annie fame) remix, came out a year later.

November 2006 saw the release the Relish Records label compilation, including two brand new DGG tracks, and early 2007 the third 12" 'Crimson as Murder' will be released.

In the meantime the DGG did not only focus on original work, but were asked to do remixes for several other acts including Ajello (Relish), Linus Loves (Breastfed), Liquid Liquid percussionist Dennis Young, Hardrock Striker and even Roxy Music.

David Gilmour Girls just finished their debut album ‘VULTURES’ for Relish, set for release in summer 2007, and co-host a bi-monthly club night in Amsterdam called ‘Last Night On Earth’.

Grand National - A Drink and A Quick Decision

from popmatters

Not too long ago, I attended a performance by Grand National in New York City while the band promoted the digital release of its new album, A Drink and a Quick Descision. Having twirled around shamelessly in my apartment to “Cherry Tree”, a Cerrone-derive disco throwback from the debut album, Kicking the National Habit (2004), I had expected an orgy of synthesizers and the obligatory laptop programmer that has somehow replaced actual instruments in concert performances of late. Instead, the beats of “Drink to Moving On” and “Peanut Dreams”—two highlights from the debut disc—were replaced by acoustic guitars. I was pleasantly surprised. I never doubted the group’s penchant for writing pop hooks, but the absence of musical ornamentation drew even more attention to the quality of the craft. That particular characteristic, which made the concert so engaging, is key to the appeal of Grand National’s latest batch of tunes. With a title that cops a line from an old Hall and Oates’ hit ("She’s Gone"), A Drink and a Quick Decision serves up ten new tracks of pop experiments by Rupert Lyddon and Lawrence “La” Rudd, a.k.a. the forces behind Grand National.
Let’s start with the single. “By the Time I Get Home There Won’t Be Much of a Place for Me” summarizes all the strengths of Lyddon and Rudd’ songwriting and producing talents. Even if singing about vacant social situations ("When I go to see them we talk about nothing"), they know how to have fun. The tune chugs along with a hard 4/4 beat and anthemic sing-a-long melody. (It’s definitely a contender for this year’s “Best Use of Cowbell” award, an honor bestowed upon the Rapture for Pieces of the People We Love from last year). It also embodies the trademark of Grand National: a melodic fusion of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. The organic veneer of the acoustic guitar, presumably the instrument that most of these songs were composed on, coupled with the synthesized blips and beeps yields a unique musical atmosphere on “By the Time ...”. The brooding rhythm track of “Animal Sounds” is another example. The low, deep tones of the bassline are like the epidermis over the song’s skeleton as it leeringly crawls underneath Rudd’s voice.

The album’s moment of excellence is undoubtedly “Going to Switch the Lights On”, the most indispensable track on A Drink and a Quick Decision. Every ingredient just works. It begins with a flamenco-flavored guitar rhythm, a distant drumbeat, and a church-like organ that plays the inverse note progression of the guitar. A smattering of drums opens the song up to a somewhat dark chorus that’s punctuated by horns. A heavy bass riff is layered just beneath the chorus. The simplicity of the verses—guitar, bass, drums, and lead vocals— thrillingly contrasts with the darkly festive chorus.

Even among such thrills, though, there are a few shortcomings. If there’s one major point of contention about the songs on A Drink and a Quick Decision, it’s the vagueness in some of the lyrics. The grooves are there but the words don’t always come across, such as on “Close Approximation”: “You do a sweet impersonation of a girlfriend looking at you”. What is that supposed to mean? Maybe nothing. Perhaps when the beat is so infectious, words are less crucial to enjoying the song. The other problem, and it definitely influences any understanding of the lyrics, is that the vocals are buried in the mix. “Reason to Hide In” and “By the Time I Get Home There Won’t Be Much of a Place for Me” suffer somewhat from this technicality. Rudd and Lyddon tend to have a cool detachment to their lyrics; the emphasis seems to be more about the mood conjured by the sound and tone of their voices rather than the actual words they’re singing.

A Drink and a Quick Decision will be devoured by those who enjoyed Kicking the National Habit. There are plenty of musical ideas to go around and, in some ways, the songwriting and melodies are more elaborate than those on its predecessor, albeit some of those ideas go a bit long ("Weird Ideas At Work”, “Tongue”, and “Cut By the Brakes” would be more enjoyable if edited down by a minute or so). “Joker and Clown”, “Pack All the Things You Need”, and “Part of a Corner” will surprise those only familiar with Grand National’s dancefloor hits. They illustrate a more introspective and contemplative side of the duo that rounds out the more upbeat material. Ultimately, A Drink and a Quick Decision positions Grand National as an important artistic force that is far from exhausting its seemingly bottomless wellspring of inspiration.

DON CASH NEW ALBUM - II

from music.guardian.co.uk

(I honestly think this review is bullshit and that the reviewer should consider changin his job to something more simple than advicing on records...your call tho)

Don Cash sees himself as part of a line of innovators that stretches back to Chuck Berry. He calls his music "new wave hip-hop", although, when asked, he often just calls it rock'n'roll; he has also been compared to Prince. You put II on eagerly and expect to be dazzled. But nearly an hour later, you think: whoever Don Cash is, he's having a laugh. The album isn't entirely rubbish - bits of it are almost quite good, largely because they sound like other things that are much better. Disco Wreck (a very now title, very Calvin Harris) sounds a bit like Green Velvet's immense floor-filler La La Land. A nasal tone, no doubt meant to imply that Cash "has the funk", doesn't help his underdeveloped sense of melody. His enthusiastically banal rhyming and Fisher-Price beats just make him sound inept. Anyone for the Terence Trent D'Arby of underground dance?

from Time out London

Toronto DJ-producer Don Cash first caught the attention of Headman, hence this showing on his fêted Relish label. Cash favours a kind of electro/hip hop/ disco-house hybrid that would go down a storm here with the Kitsuné/Ed Banger/ Institubes crowd, although since he likes moodiness and open spaces almost as much as a bangin’ choon, maybe not. Cash himself calls it ‘new wave rap’ – whatever, its mix of Prince, Jacques Lu Cont, Gonzalez and Green Velvet should rock most worlds.
